Description
A small bird, identified as a male Downy Woodpecker is perched on the side of a tree. The background is blurred, focusing attention on the bird's detailed feathers and the texture of the tree bark.
The adult male Downy Woodpecker is identified by a patch of crimson red feathers on the back of his head. The rest of his plumage is made up of black and white feathers, black central tail feathers and white outer tail feathers.
Seen in suburbs and small parks, where they feed on insects and grubs which they find under bark, on plant stems, and in galls of trees.
Did you know? Woodpeckers don’t sing songs, but they drum loudly against pieces of wood or metal. People sometimes think this drumming is part of the birds’ feeding habits, but it isn’t. In fact, feeding birds make surprisingly little noise even when they’re digging vigorously into wood.
So the way I've found this handsome woodpecker in a small neighborhood park was by listening to his drumming and searching the tree for him.
